• Hi all and welcome to TheWoodHaven2 brought into the 21st Century, kicking and screaming! We all have Alasdair to thank for the vast bulk of the heavy lifting to get us here, no more so than me because he's taken away a huge burden of responsibility from my shoulders and brought us to this new shiny home, with all your previous content (hopefully) still intact! Please peruse and feed back. There is still plenty to do, like changing the colour scheme, adding the banner graphic, tweaking the odd setting here and there so I have added a new thread in the 'Technical Issues, Bugs and Feature Requests' forum for you to add any issues you find, any missing settings or just anything you'd like to see added/removed from the feature set that Xenforo offers. We will get to everything over the coming weeks so please be patient, but add anything at all to the thread I mention above and we promise to get to them over the next few days/weeks/months. In the meantime, please enjoy!

Auction that will interest.

I hope the link works auction based in Ledbury in Hertfordshire on the 15th as mentioned in the other place, allsorts of lovely bits in there for people like us, even a treadle lathe! Boxes of wooden moulding planes Stanley planes some usable woodworking equipment and strange things like Castrol oil cans, some interesting planks of timber plus the usual Wadkin type stuff. Ian

It does look tempting... I've not yet made it to Pugh's but I know that people have reported getting some good timber there. And as for the lathes - there's a wood lathe and a metal one, both complete with treadles, and another one which could be converted back. They'll make someone happy!

I used to go there when I lived in Bromsgrove and it's very much worth a visit if you're a good judge of timber. Be careful though - I've seen some boards go for ridiculous prices.

Get thee behind me Ian!
Bearing in mind Gill's wise words on timber prices, is it possible to occasionally get a steal on tools or are prices generally on par with more accessible online auctions sites like ebay and snapped up by dealers. There's a couple of smaller handtools I fancy but having never used an online auction house I'm leery of getting my fingers burned. I'm not working this Saturday so for those versed , do I decide my top price and factor in the extra sales/ auction 'tax' and whack it in early or see what's happening on the day and watch online?

Oh Happy Days. Really miss Pugh's. I've bought (and sold) a lot there over the years. You know you've been going there for too long when Howard (auctioneer and owner) addresses you by your christian name when you're bidding !

Hah, this one makes me chuckle.

Auto-Memota.pngI don't know what brand the machine is - but Auto-Memota is the switchgear - manufactured by MEM (Midland Electric Manufacturing Co. Ltd.) - not the machine.

For example: I have MEM switchgear on my Denbigh drill press; my Wadkin woodlathe (built in); and my Wadkin surface planer, and a MEM isolating switch on my Preston (Canada) bandsaw.

Cheers, Vann.

It's what happens when I'm not around to help them catalogue the stuff ;)

I actively avoid auctions. They are just so tempting, so I hate threads like this as I can't help looking. I used to go to art auctions a lot and it got me into buying and selling pictures when I was in my twenties and thirties. Gets addictive. I know I would buy wood, or tools. Or both. Then be told off.

Really I need to start selling stuff.

For example I have a really nice bookbinder's press (cast iron, brass handles etc) that is great for veneering (used to use it for making guitar bindings and such like). Probably never use it again and they go for quite a lot of money now.

My first sale was some turning blanks. Well, I'd called them offcuts and destined for the fire but at the preceding sale I'd seen how much offcuts...sorry, turning blanks... were going for. That netted me £80.

They also do field sales of, basically, junk. Again, I popped along to have a look and thought..."I've got a load of things like that destined for the tip". That brought me in £140 at the next sale.
