• Hi all and welcome to TheWoodHaven2 brought into the 21st Century, kicking and screaming! We all have Alasdair to thank for the vast bulk of the heavy lifting to get us here, no more so than me because he's taken away a huge burden of responsibility from my shoulders and brought us to this new shiny home, with all your previous content (hopefully) still intact! Please peruse and feed back. There is still plenty to do, like changing the colour scheme, adding the banner graphic, tweaking the odd setting here and there so I have added a new thread in the 'Technical Issues, Bugs and Feature Requests' forum for you to add any issues you find, any missing settings or just anything you'd like to see added/removed from the feature set that Xenforo offers. We will get to everything over the coming weeks so please be patient, but add anything at all to the thread I mention above and we promise to get to them over the next few days/weeks/months. In the meantime, please enjoy!

In-car navigation conundrum....

As I'm making the very long trek down South in the S2000, after leaving the M6 at Preston I head off cross-country. Normally I use the mobile and Google Maps and that links in to the Mazda car sound system which makes hearing directions much easier - no tinny sounding mobile phone speaker.. No such option in the Honda unless anyone can think of a tech solution to get sound out of the Mobile and into the FM radio.

So I got one of those gizmos to suction-grip to the screen and hold the phone so I could watch the route. Only it's a curved windscreen and the suction pad just falls off.

So looking for some lateral thinking, please.
 
I'm not sure we allow old folk in sporty motors like that down here in the southwest. :)
Are there bluetooth/speaker adapters that fit into a cigarette lighter socket?
 
Had that problem with my old Honda CRV I linked it to a small (very cheap bought at a petrol station) Bluetooth speaker, never did find a perfect spot to put the phone but bluetack is good
 
I used to use a Bluetooth to FM-transmitter dongle for exactly that in my old V40 about 10 years ago. I am sure such dongles are still around.

Bingo....you just reminded me that I've got Roger-FM. FM transmitter - mains powered but not an issue -
 
Or wireless ear buds. Enables phone to be used hands free as well.
 
I use one of the air vent mounting ones too. I've never liked windscreen mounting ones as they block part of the windscreen. More of a problem on some cars than others of course but never an issue with an air vent mounted type.
 
i have an air vent clip on too, the downside is in the winter if you have hot air blowing on to the phone perhaps.
I use a selfie stick thus.

Sadly 'Reality' reared its ugly head. I have nowhere suitable to fit it. These vents are at the ideal height. Pity I've got hands on the end of my arms.

I bought one of these years ago -

It's a rubber type material that is quite grippy and doesn't slide about. I don't need it for my car as i use android auto and don't need the phone screen. i've used it on various rental cars on holiday where I didn't have other options. worked fine.

Positioning, there are 3 points or contact, the far end and the corners of the phone. Of course driving style has a part to play too. I would not have bought a selfie stick for this purpose but there was one in the car, I tried it and it worked. Sat nav is bluetoothed to the in car stereo.
 
At one point I had one with a sticky pad and a hinged arm and ball joint at the phone end that was designed to stick to the dash. Does your suction cup one have a sticky pad too? Or can it be stuck to the dash instead of the windscreen?

The dash is not smooth enough and I don't really want to stick anything that isn't removable without trace.
 
Applying some lateral thinking ....aka "the 'bleedin' obvious but not to me"...I asked on the S2000 forum what those guys used. This one is the neatest solution.....fits under the trim and uses an existing bolt ..various add-ons then get you a mobile mount

What you need is one of these, it is reliable and will keep the brain active compared to one of those devices that just drives you up the wall and is nothing more than a distraction stuck in your face. Plan your route by making bullet points, it is often more fun to not know where you are.
