Tried it Andy, and it's still far too salty. There's not even Lo-Salt on the table any more which was my preferred 'go to' so over the last few years. I've not added any additional salt/sodium to any of my grub for quite a while; SWIMBO likewise, although she has a pot of sea salt on the table with a small jade spoon I made for her - RobRob, a low salt variant, in a blue capped jar, is available.
Yep. I think of marmite as being bovril for vegetarians. Okay if you don't/won't eat meat, but a pale imitation otherwise.Bovril is rendered cow,Marmite is rendered yeast.
Different source but same process
I prefer peanut butter and Nutella spread as a treat.Aldi 1kg tubs of peanut butter are not only well priced but very tasty. I've tried the Aldi marmite but went back to the original.
If you've not tried it, peanut butter and marmite is an excellent topping.
I don't doubt you're right, Gill, but I'm struggling to work out how you add Marmite to mushrooms and walnuts.Marmite is great with fried mushrooms and walnuts, generously sprinkled with chopped parsley. Really. I had some today wrapped in a tortilla.
It was and the taste wasn't the same. Thankfully they went back to the original recipe after BSE.I have an inkling that Bovril was re-formulated during the BSC scare to drop the Beef stock content.
Also an excellent choiceI prefer peanut butter and Nutella spread as a treat.
As far as I’m aware marmite has been made in Burton on Trent for well over a hundred years I doubt the Burtonians would be very happy being considered brummiesLate '40's early 50's family friend who worked at Marmite in B'ham used to bring us/me a Jam jar of Marmite whenever they came for their camping breaks in farm meadows adjacent to River Severn. Loved the stuff ever since.
Worse. If I have anything beyond my hot cocoa in the morning it'll be French toast. The 'mite stuff you guys eat is gross.I bet you as kids ate worms and bugs.

Not that same smell of course but that brings back memories of my daily commute around the south circular in the late 80s early 90s . Youngs Ram Brewery on Wandsworth High street made the end of the journey from SE London just about bearable. Getting stuck behind the horse drawn drays was a highlight too. Many years ago I would drive past the factory every working day the smell was lovely,
Lightly fry onions in an oil and butter mix. Add mushrooms and walnuts plus a splash of water and half a teaspoon of marmite. Cook until the water evaporates and the mushrooms fry out. Sprinkle a generous amount of fresh parsley and serve with shredded lettuce in a tortilla wrap. You won’t be disappointed.I don't doubt you're right, Gill, but I'm struggling to work out how you add Marmite to mushrooms and walnuts.
