• Hi all and welcome to TheWoodHaven2 brought into the 21st Century, kicking and screaming! We all have Alasdair to thank for the vast bulk of the heavy lifting to get us here, no more so than me because he's taken away a huge burden of responsibility from my shoulders and brought us to this new shiny home, with all your previous content (hopefully) still intact! Please peruse and feed back. There is still plenty to do, like changing the colour scheme, adding the banner graphic, tweaking the odd setting here and there so I have added a new thread in the 'Technical Issues, Bugs and Feature Requests' forum for you to add any issues you find, any missing settings or just anything you'd like to see added/removed from the feature set that Xenforo offers. We will get to everything over the coming weeks so please be patient, but add anything at all to the thread I mention above and we promise to get to them over the next few days/weeks/months. In the meantime, please enjoy!

I suspect like most woodworkers I hate throwing timber away but what I’m also terrible for is not looking at what I’ve got before placing an order for the next job, I usually get a price on what I need when quoting & if I get the job just order up what I’ve priced, it’s just easier than searching through the wood stores.

Today I ran out of time to get to the merchants before 12:00 & the job I had planned to do got rained off so I decided to make a start in the workshop on some bits & pieces for a small kitchen alteration job which involved some Ash panels.

I was pretty sure I had some veneered Ash MDF but after a few hours sorting I discovered I had way more than I thought the bigger surprise was how long I’d had it

So I’m now on a mission to list what I’ve got & where so that I can start & dwindle it down, I’m also planning a few home projects to use up the unbelievable amount of offcuts of redwood I appear to have saved :eusa-shifty: anyone else a wood hoarder

You must have looked after that Ash well Doug, it still looks brand new, often goes a bit yellowish.
My problem is I shall be moving out of my large workshop in 18 months and will have to dispose of all my stock including 4 long boards of brown Oak that I bought just in case lol

Yep, I am a wood hoarder too. I honestly don't know how any small workshop would function without a stock of off-cuts.

Yup! Both stuff from the workshop build, including OSB offcuts, and I'm building up a bit of a stash of tonewoods that I need to turn into instruments! :)

MMm...yes and no. I've a couple of racks of basically thin laths left after ripping etc. Accumulates. Falls off. Annoys. So there I was today looking for some shutting strips for a couple of doors. Found what I thought was spot on...took them indoors to offer up....too thin.

Back to the workshop and thought "I've got too much of this stuff" and so cut them down to more usable firelighting lengths. Two hours later I realised that they would have been perfect for another 'fill-in' :(

But don't forget Roger's Law No 2

If it's thick enough, it won't be wide enough.

If it's thick enough and wide enough, it won't be long enough

If it's thick enough, wide enough and long enough, you will only have one piece when the project needs two.

Yep, same here. I have several boxes full of 'useful' :eusa-whistle: offcuts (of various sizes) which will see the light of day at some time and they do occasionally get delved into when I need a specific timber of roughly X by Y dimensions. Two particular crates are for pine offcuts (cramping blocks etc) and thin bits of ply which I use for all sorts of stuff - Rob

I needed to re organise my stock of offcuts so I measured how much: 3m3

I am also a hoarder.
Generally use lots of the offcuts for scroll saw work, from 3mm MDF to 20mm pine to 20+mm mahogany.

This last project I used every piece of pine (FupF visited) that I could find.

Not-usable bits go into a box for the cleaner to take home for fire wood.

It's an illness. All woodworkers hoard offcuts. And tools.

I still have stocks of musical instrument tonewoods and ebony etc that I bought 30 years ago. I even keep green oak offcuts (3 wheelie bins full). The small bits go in the BBQ as smoking timber. Really cracked bits go in the log burner stack, but I must have at least a cubic metre of lengths of oak bean all about 40-80 cm long. No idea what I will do with them. Plus about 20 sheets of ply and stuff in stock, and I am just a hobbyist hoarder. 8-)

I’ve two containers at a mates that I store timber in, no daylight gets in apart from when the doors are open so I don’t get much discolouration.
Both containers are full as is the outdoor racking at home so I do really need to start making in roads into it, though I’m glad I’m not alone

I'm not telling anyone just how much I have in case I get into even more trouble from the missus. We've been in this house 35 years and I still have a small mountain I brought with me having already had much of it at least 5 to 10 years.

I suspect I'm in good company with many "wood collectors" who never say no to decent timber.

I still remember the bemused looks from the removal guys when they carried in some of "really useful woodworking stock" - but moving to a new house is just the time it's needed most! (Not that I've used it all yet... and I may have added to it a bit...)

Thank you Doug, your post has got me into the workshop to sort out my mountain of off-cuts.
So far I've cut up 2 large bag-fulls, all hardwood, which I'll be giving to a friend who has a wood burner.

No, he's a good plasterer but a lousy woodworker!!

I really can’t see the point of hoarding offcuts etc.

Complete waste of time.

Not me. No sir. Never do that

Well, look at it this way. Only 97 days to go :eusa-whistle:
