• Hi all and welcome to TheWoodHaven2 brought into the 21st Century, kicking and screaming! We all have Alasdair to thank for the vast bulk of the heavy lifting to get us here, no more so than me because he's taken away a huge burden of responsibility from my shoulders and brought us to this new shiny home, with all your previous content (hopefully) still intact! Please peruse and feed back. There is still plenty to do, like changing the colour scheme, adding the banner graphic, tweaking the odd setting here and there so I have added a new thread in the 'Technical Issues, Bugs and Feature Requests' forum for you to add any issues you find, any missing settings or just anything you'd like to see added/removed from the feature set that Xenforo offers. We will get to everything over the coming weeks so please be patient, but add anything at all to the thread I mention above and we promise to get to them over the next few days/weeks/months. Ok so I have made a bit of a major @@@@ up. making Oak windows, machined all the sections, dry fitted, taken apart and put aside for gluing later, fine.

Got ahead of myself and glued one up yesterday forgetting I hadn't put the ovolo mould on the inside edges, only needed jambs and mullions, so I have run it as far as I can with the router but need to get it into the corner joint with the head and cill.

My incanel gouges don't work so i thought I could get a back bent one, but looking around and never having bought a gouge before, my question, if anyone can enlighten me, is how do I find the size that would be a close match to a 12mm Ovolo, with the different sweeps and widths to choose from as in https://www.oldtoolstore.co.uk/back-ben ... 1447-p.asp

Paul, not on your scale, but I needed a gouge for a specific job and matched it by doing a Google image search for "woodcarving gouge sweeps". It gives a good choice of charts - I printed one off and was able to get an exact match easily.

Hope that helps but someone with a faster answer and more knowledge on the topic may be along!

If you want a metric size, Pfeil are good and widely available, eg from Classic Hand Tools. Their catalogue explains the continental sizes and sweeps over several pages starting here

Older UK tools (inc Iles I think) use the Sheffield List system.
 
Thank you for the input, I'm still not sure, Robert, Andy, I even had the right option, having looked at the Pfeil chart, still not sure if any of them will help, I have added some pictures for context if that helps with clarity of my cu.

Well, having seen the photos and been reminded of the earlier discussion, if I were you I'd see how much I could do with an ordinary chisel. First step would be to continue the rebate through to the end. Then make a consistent 45 degree chamfer, down as far as the circular part. Then chamfer those two arrises, and repeat. A skewed chisel might help. Finish with a scraper and a custom shaped sanding block.
 
I would not use a gouge for that. A straight chisel is perfectly good you just take the bulk out and then take very small cuts with say a very sharp 6-10mm chisel. After all the outside of a curve is just an infinite number of straight edges. Then clean up with sandpaper.
At least that is what someone with experience of this tells me :oops:
