• Hi all and welcome to TheWoodHaven2 brought into the 21st Century, kicking and screaming! We all have Alasdair to thank for the vast bulk of the heavy lifting to get us here, no more so than me because he's taken away a huge burden of responsibility from my shoulders and brought us to this new shiny home, with all your previous content (hopefully) still intact! Please peruse and feed back. There is still plenty to do, like changing the colour scheme, adding the banner graphic, tweaking the odd setting here and there so I have added a new thread in the 'Technical Issues, Bugs and Feature Requests' forum for you to add any issues you find, any missing settings or just anything you'd like to see added/removed from the feature set that Xenforo offers. We will get to everything over the coming weeks so please be patient, but add anything at all to the thread I mention above and we promise to get to them over the next few days/weeks/months. In the meantime, please enjoy!

SWIMBO has of late been collecting a few nice pots for honey, jam and marmalade as it's definitely not the 'done thing' :eusa-whistle: to have a jar on the table. As such, she's made an entry into the Projects Book (my old Ax diary) for some suitable spoons, one of which has just been finished:

As Blackcurrant jam is my most favourite of all the jams (marmalade is very different and highly contentious) it seemed entirely appropriate to make a little spoon in African Blackwood.

If I say it was damned tricky, difficult and plain bloody awkward, it wouldn't in the least be over egging the pudding, but it does fit quite well into the jam pot:

The other spoon that was finished this morning and is now on it's second coat of Peacock Oil:

...is this sinewous confection in Apple. I did have perfect piece of English Walnut for it, but went too thin in the bowl, so it's now consigned to the wheely bin. This applewood spoon was also difficult as this stuff is also pretty hard, but it'll eventually end up in my daughter's Christmas stocking - Rob

No nor me, probably not at all easy! And easy to gouge lumps out of yourself I imagine.
Made a silver one once, let’s just say I would be very poor making them for a living. Ian

Guess how I made that dead smooth, perfectly round bowl, about the size of a 2p piece or a little smaller. African Blackwood is hard, very hard - Rob

Very seasoned and very hard, but not as hard as the ABW - Rob
 
Well done for persevering Rob. They do look nice


However I do not have a problem extracting jam nor honey from their respective jars with a knife, a wooden variant of which would be much easier to make.
I guess I was not brung up proper. :D
 
If the said knife is coated with butter some will come off in the jam/honey and possibly make it go off, a spoon removes this problem.

As a jam maker it rubs me up the wrong way.

Definitely Andy; you wasn't brung up proper. If there's one thing (amongst many) that irritates SWIMBO it's a contaminated knife :cry:

But how did I make the perfectly round, semi-spherical bowl in the jam spoon, bearing in mind that African Blackwood is hideously hard? There's a cyber Mars Bar for the spot on answer :D - Rob

Well it's out of your comfort zone, but I would have mounted it on the lathe and turned the inside.

Was it a specially made/adapted scraper with a curve? Like a sharpened washer?

Nope, that would have left a 90deg 'ole with straight sides. Clue; the answer lies within the hallowed portals of Classic Hand Tools and it's an item not made in the UK :D - Rob

The 'ole is semi spherical; the tool in question came from across the North Sea :D - Rob

To put you lot out of your misery, the rough profile of the bowl was ground with a spherical ball cutter used in a Ax flexible shaft (https://www.axminstertools.com/heavy-du ... aft-910258) and it was very effective on such a hard wood:

The final semi-spherical profile was shaped and smoothed using a small pneumatic Kirjes sanding drum thingie:

The specialised sanding jobbies go from 80g, 150g and 320g so it was simply a case of fitting the appropriate one, giving the drum a squirt of air and jamming into the rough cut 'ole; the one on the bench has is the final one I used.

Nobody wins the Mars Bar :lol: - Rob
