• Hi all and welcome to TheWoodHaven2 brought into the 21st Century, kicking and screaming! We all have Alasdair to thank for the vast bulk of the heavy lifting to get us here, no more so than me because he's taken away a huge burden of responsibility from my shoulders and brought us to this new shiny home, with all your previous content (hopefully) still intact! Please peruse and feed back. There is still plenty to do, like changing the colour scheme, adding the banner graphic, tweaking the odd setting here and there so I have added a new thread in the 'Technical Issues, Bugs and Feature Requests' forum for you to add any issues you find, any missing settings or just anything you'd like to see added/removed from the feature set that Xenforo offers. We will get to everything over the coming weeks so please be patient, but add anything at all to the thread I mention above and we promise to get to them over the next few days/weeks/months. In the meantime, please enjoy!

Spot for a cabin, delayed for 5 years, maybe this year.

So SWMBO compained about the local of the outhouse, she wanted it closer. I said it is a short walk, Im sure you can manage.1000011503.jpg

How about “Abandon all hope …..”. ?

Or. “Mind the gap”. That one’s probably only understood by Londoners

Not sure if Dr Who has made it to Canada, but, if it has, you could call it "The Turdis" but then you'd probably have to paint it blue. (That's not a serious suggestion...)

What about leaving it where it is and and instead make a pathway of (elevated) planks from the house to it? That makes for a better trip to it in the middle of the night. No tripping over roots with a sleepy head and such...

Another thing I have learned is to make sure there is some flat downward sloping ground behind the outhouse. That makes pulling out the box underneath much easier. I have even seen some cases where people made a guide of angle irons to let the box slide over to make it even easier. The most luxurious version I have seen also had a ring on the front and back with a chain attached so they could pull the box out and back in by car.

Make sure there is a spot on the wall to place a toilet roll and a lamp on. Many people don't like the idea of placing those on the planks next to the seat. Or buy one of those LED-lights that go on and off automatically. I have one outside the shed where my waste bins are and it goes for more than a year on one set of batteries. I like the comfort of not having to switch on or off the light.

The path to take is where I back the truck in, thinking of doing a mulched path and a few solar LEDs. One in the outhouse and two on the path. As the pit starts to pile up I will shovel it out and move it to a larger waste hole and cover with soil. The pull out container is a good idea.

Door is hung and started the centre beam lamination. The beavers have been letting me know that they are watching.

You’re not hanging about Scott, you’ll have it finished before I’ve got my workshop half done at this rate!
We will see Ian, keep in mind that I won't have the inside trimmed up or the stain/paint on the exterior. Probably not the tin roof either. But t&g sheathing with ice and water shield for the roof will do till next year.

Most ingenious Scott, reminds me of Wally Wallington rebuilding Stone Henge on his own!
The amount of spare land at that timber yard made me think how plentiful land is per person where you are, what sort of cost is an acre where you are?

Arable land goes for 4 thousand to 8 per acre, our lakefront is worth about 275 thousand. Keep in mind water front properties are at the high end.
A 100 acre bush lot goes for 150 to 200 thousand.

I thought, Scott, that you were transporting/ re-building another building you've got elsewhere on your site. This looks to me like you're building from scratch.

I was Mike, but we decided to in the end fix up the large shed. My wife made a good point as to where would the contents go.
Still using up my store of 6x6 salvaged timber and should have enough left for the rest of the posts.

That ladder system is something I'll be sure to remember. Never thought of it myself. But it sure is handy when you are working on your own (as I most often do). Thanks for that sir! Most useful.
