We all have Alasdair to thank for the vast bulk of the heavy lifting to get us here, no more so than me because he's taken away a huge burden of responsibility from my shoulders and brought us to this new shiny home, with all your previous content (hopefully) still intact! Please peruse and feed back. There is still plenty to do, like changing the colour scheme, adding the banner graphic, tweaking the odd setting here and there so I have added a new thread in the 'Technical Issues, Bugs and Feature Requests' forum for you to add any issues you find, any missing settings or just anything you'd like to see added/removed from the feature set that Xenforo offers. We will get to everything over the coming weeks so please be patient, but add anything at all to the thread I mention above and we promise to get to them over the next few days/weeks/months. What I have fixed today

What were your radon levels? Our's fluctuate between 18 to 34. A level not to worry about.
Here the government recommendation is to mitigate if levels are above 4 pCi/L. Ours were about 8 when it was measured in May. The previous owners installed the system at our request as a condition of sale. We also have an ERV which I have set to keep a slight positive air pressure inside the house which should also reduce any infiltration. I will be re-testing the levels this weekend.
 
Could you not dispense with the fan altogether? The pipe would work like a chimney or a stench pipe, the wind at roof level would be enough to evacuate the pipe, would it not.?

Probably that wouldn't work. I say that because the system comes with a simple U-tube manometer. If I turn off the fan the manometer equalizes: negligible difference in atmospheric pressure. With the fan it pulls 6 inches of water. There are smaller and presumably quieter fans but this is the one the installers recommended. I don't know how they choose what size to use.
 
The radon levels vary in intensity through Ontario, my son lives in the Niagara region very close to the border and their levels are high.
He recycles the basement air on a continual basis as well as a system similar to yours but having the pipe in the sump pump pit.
The homes without a vapour barrier below the basement concrete floor are a problem.

Returned from holiday on Saturday 15th August. One of the days we visited The Japanese Garden in St Mawgan, near Newquay and I bought some bonsai pots. LOML also decided she'd like another wind chime...

We've got one near the house but I'd been thinking about putting one down by the pond. Move the one we've got was my initial thinking... However, LOML picked one out so fait accompli...

Last Saturday I dug out an old metal hanger for some hanging plant pot that's been pushed from pillar to post for ages - can't remember where it came from. Only one problem; meant to be fixed *under* something = screws go up into... or if fixed as I needed to it would be too close to the Retreat...

Solution... straighten the "arm" so it can be screwed to an upright on the corner of her "Retreat"... So, straightener, treat for some rust, paint with some very old paint and leave to dry... that was Saturday

We have a wind chime. I HATE it. Tinkle tinkle all the *&^*^$^* time. It was a present from some friends, much more their idea of cute than mine. I daren't suggest we get rid of it, they want to come over at some point.

Just drop it on the ground underneath the hanger Steve and when they come looking say "oh dear I hadn't noticed the wind must have blown it off", hang it up and take it down again when they've gone.

Or throw it in the bin and tell them it's been nicked by the local kids or a Magpie with muscles like Popeye. 😉

Or perhaps just take it down and if they ask about it then be honest and say it's not really your thing.
 
Oops 😬... didn't want to cause so much 'discord' amongst ya ! 🤣 Guess it's all personal. I'll agree that when the wind blows HARD it can be a racket but they're best taken down in such strong winds. Otherwise I (personally) find they can be relaxing. I've become so used to the tinkle that, at night with the window open, that 'tinkle tinkle' is relaxing.

Nearly 40 years ago we moved from a farmhouse on the edge West Yorkshire moors - peace and quiet in abundance... except when the damn cuckoo would arrive and start their calling at an ungodly early hour in the morning. However, given a bit of time we got used to it... UNTIL they migrated away to Africa or wherever and we didn't hear them. THEN we'd wake because it had become so quiet again.

Also... moving from there to here, where the house is on a busy main road into and out of the town, the traffic noise was horrendous - especially when the quarry lorries would go over a loose manhole cover at around 4am every week day. We got used to it... As could you lot with wind chimes 🤣
 
Well... I've got to be honest with you all... nothing of pampas grass or stone pineapples had any meanings to me until now... even though born in 1951. I had to Google 'pampas grass code' and then, after the response, tell Google why I was asking about it. I got the distinct feeling Google was having a bit of a giggle 😃

OK guys... I accept the 'mickey take/leg pulling' but this wind chime isn't a cheap tinkly tinkly racket making wind chime - it's far more engineered than such things. If that's what you've got or were given you should be having an accident and getting rid of...

I quite like them, well some at least. We have one outside the back door which I made from 22mm copper pipe. Specific lengths and hanging support6s supposed to give accurate musical notes. I don't know as I'm not in the slightest musical but they sound OK to me. It's sheltered otherwise I may have a different opinion.
 
I can take them or leave them, but I made one as a gift for my eldest stepdaughter about six years ago, which her daughter "borrowed" and hung from a Walnut tree in our paddock. From there it dropped into a compost heap, and we rescued it a few months back.
They're actually quite complicated to make, I'd assumed that the relationship between length and pitch would similar to a plucked string, i.e. 12th root of two stuff, but it isn't - I can't remember how it works right now, but there's stuff on-line about it. You also have to suspend each chime from a node point, while paying attention to where the striker strikes the chimes, so you have to adjust the length of each suspension string accordingly. I did a simple 5 chime pentatonic using 15mm copper, which works surprisingly well. I had to play around with the "key" of the device to make maximum use of the copper pipe offcut that I had to hand, so I doubt that it's concert pitch.
 
Those copper tube thingies would drive me round the bend; you may as well camp out on Westminster Bridge if that's your bag. I've gone for a much more refined, acceptable 'tinkle' all year round and have had several furin bells dotted around. This one in brass of Mount Fuji emits the gentlest tinkle in the very lightest breeze:

...and was the only one of it's sort I ever saw...so I bought it! Cast iron and glass bells can be purchased fairly cheaply from almost anywhere and the prices shown on the linkie bear no resemblance in any way shape or form to what you actually pay in Japan. SWIMBO doesn't like this cast iron three set furin as it can't be painted so it's:

...needs a stronger wind to get the clapper moving. The only down side is that the constant twirling of the cord eventually means it breaks so needs to be replaced - Rob

The link given in my 'discussion' with Google doesn't go to the website of the company "Woodstock Chimes" but a different site in the UK.

The tubes used in their manufacturing is usually aluminium which is then coated... in this case a bronze coating.

If anyone's curious about what they make (the range of differing chimes/bells/instruments then a search for Woodstock Chimes or visit https://chimes.com in the USA. There's also a UK website I've yet to visit...

To be honest guys... all I was expecting, if any comments would made, was along the lines of: nice use of a old plant hanger... well recycled - or similar 🤔
 
Is chime- envy a thing?
We have got a bamboo one that used to clatter a jaunty irritation at three in the morning until a passing storm tangled it up as a favour.
The Boston Ivy has now hidden the evidence.
 
I've had/got the remnants of two of those bamboo ones Martin. The trouble with the ones I have/had is the bamboo splits... they were pleasant enough in the beginning but...

If not wanting to be woken at such hours then take it down or put a rubber band around the 'tubes' so the sail doesn't get to clatter them 😎
