• Hi all and welcome to TheWoodHaven2 brought into the 21st Century, kicking and screaming! We all have Alasdair to thank for the vast bulk of the heavy lifting to get us here, no more so than me because he's taken away a huge burden of responsibility from my shoulders and brought us to this new shiny home, with all your previous content (hopefully) still intact! Please peruse and feed back. There is still plenty to do, like changing the colour scheme, adding the banner graphic, tweaking the odd setting here and there so I have added a new thread in the 'Technical Issues, Bugs and Feature Requests' forum for you to add any issues you find, any missing settings or just anything you'd like to see added/removed from the feature set that Xenforo offers. We will get to everything over the coming weeks so please be patient, but add anything at all to the thread I mention above and we promise to get to them over the next few days/weeks/months. In the meantime, please enjoy!

Good job you circled them, Duke - would never have noticed them without! :)

    Which micrometers?

I just collected this set, just 2.5 years old and in perfect condition, sold by a nice young fella whose first engineering job bought it for him and he's now with another company. It's the lad's Christmas present, should do for him a good while :) Thanks for the advice all.

    A belt sander revamp?

Do you have a drawing or photo of where this is going, Tom? I'm interested as I have a similar sander that I just started thinking about/ working on to make it more useful.

    Which micrometers?

I quite enjoyed this video. Maybe the real difference between Mitutoyo and the cheap Chinese ones is speed, frequency of use and longevity? (Pleasure of smooth, quality machining, too.) If that's the case, for occasional use, would it be fair to say that it makes far less difference than...

    Which micrometers?

It was to order the correct size piston for an engine rebuild - we measured the bore with a digital bore gauge, but wanted to check the old piston size to confirm what we needed. It turned out we needed to replace the 53.97mm piston with a 53.98 (C piston replaced with D piston, apparently -...

    Which micrometers?

Thanks Al. Size is tricky, as one measurement will be (for eg) a piston diameter (so over 50mm); the next it's small bearings (as you say). We have plenty of old Imperial ones, but I'm hoping to get easy to use metric. As for the fake/ genuine article, that's a whole other can of worms!

    Which micrometers?

I'm drawn to a used set of these, for sale nearby for a relatively low price (in very good condition, apparently): https://www.hoffmann-group.com/GB/en/houk/p/420800-0-100#downloadsAndDocuments But for a little more, I can buy the first four micrometers on this link (new), and I do think...

Best way to get this tree down ?

Agree with Mike, leave it to someone who knows how to set about it. All sorts could happen when you start to cut.

I'm in the good books for now.

Given your homestead, I was expecting at least a 10' live tree. Very disappointing. :)

    Heat Treatment Oven

We've been looking for an old test kiln to convert, hadn't seen this title. It's arriving before Christmas, delivered for 3.50 is great! Thanks Phil.

    Bread machine missing flour

That was a while back, Mark; since then, we bought a new machine, and the missing flour mystery became the missing air bubbles mystery. :)Sorted now, thanks to suggestions here.

    Bread machine missing flour

Well, I nearly doubled the amount of yeast and added slightly less salt. It's supposed to be a medium-size loaf but it rose above the level of the tin and looks a much better texture than we had before. The proof of the pudding, of course, is to come - it's currently cooling down, but very...

    Bread machine missing flour

Shipton Mill kept us going through the Covid lock downs, but then I got lazy again. I need to get back to using them. Our local supermarkets don't seem to sell good bread, and the farm shop sells great bread but close to £5 for a loaf. And, having seen comments above on yeast, I checked the...

Thanks Steve - I'll have a go in the morning and report back.

    Bread machine missing flour

Just a quick one - we use a basic recipe (yeast: 1tsp; strong white flour: 500g; sugar: 1.5 tsp; olive oil: guess at about 25g, but definitely varies; salt 1.25 tsp (but often a bit more); water: 350ml (slightly above cold). Cooked in the Panasonic SD-2501WXC. I've done a bit of searching...

Denbigh Drill Press (not - Meddings pillar drill 3ph to 1ph conversion)

Well, that wasn't such a tricky fix. It turns out the thrust bearing doesn't need to fit tight as directly above it is a deep groove bearing which fits pretty snug, and another within the knurled holder at the top of the quill. So all the thrust bearing needs to do is reduce rotational friction...

Denbigh Drill Press (not - Meddings pillar drill 3ph to 1ph conversion)

It is a lovely thing, Mike - yours looks like the later, H&S aware version! I think the handle on ours is correct, having looked at pictures around the web, but not the colour. There's no draw bar at the top, just what I assume is a collar for setting depth: And no lock nuts! :-( Any idea...

Denbigh Drill Press (not - Meddings pillar drill 3ph to 1ph conversion)

Hm, we found an M3 screw fits the thread in the small holes, so I suppose they must've been added at a later date. And they make no difference to the spindle slowly moving down the shroud as they're actually situated above the bearing that's fixed to the inside of the shroud, and thus above the...

Denbigh Drill Press (not - Meddings pillar drill 3ph to 1ph conversion)

Thanks Bob - Having looked at your pics, I returned to the drill and can see that the three small holes in the housing (shroud - thanks for the correct term) are indeed threaded. So it'd make sense that screws pass through them onto the surface of the bearing that currently slips down - tho the...
