• Hi all and welcome to TheWoodHaven2 brought into the 21st Century, kicking and screaming! We all have Alasdair to thank for the vast bulk of the heavy lifting to get us here, no more so than me because he's taken away a huge burden of responsibility from my shoulders and brought us to this new shiny home, with all your previous content (hopefully) still intact! Please peruse and feed back. There is still plenty to do, like changing the colour scheme, adding the banner graphic, tweaking the odd setting here and there so I have added a new thread in the 'Technical Issues, Bugs and Feature Requests' forum for you to add any issues you find, any missing settings or just anything you'd like to see added/removed from the feature set that Xenforo offers. We will get to everything over the coming weeks so please be patient, but add anything at all to the thread I mention above and we promise to get to them over the next few days/weeks/months. In the meantime, please enjoy!

    Micrometer storage

I have several micrometers that see almost no use, from one years end to the next, Packing these up for storage (rust proof paper etc.) should the anvil faces be closed, or open, or clamping paper? I seem to recall, that to prevent corrosion the faces should be.... that bit I forget. Any ideas...

    What do I have here?

Recently I aquired the top saw, Disston No. 7/D7 Aged by the medallion to 1896 - 1917 (disregard it's blade it's a Tyzack.Sons & Turner. Been changed at sometime in the past) The lower saw is from my "collection" brought some years ago, because ir would fit in the tool box. No medallion or...

    Shinto rasp

Wonderful tools for what they are for, coarse on one side, fine on the other. Just be sure to make a cover for them, or they will attack anything laying beside them! Bod1

Affinity Water - meter now activated conundrum

@Gremmy I assume when you shut the pavement stopcock, you did check the house had no running water? (leastways at the kitchen cold tap) I always refused an outside meter, as I knew 3 houses shared "my" street stopcock. An internal meter was fitted without problems. Bod1

Anyone in the UK know what one is? I'm in need of spares for mine, only E-Bay USA seems to know of them but only as N.O.S with huge postage costs. Bod1

Yup, I've a tracking list very similar to yours. Item acknowledged, then depot, out for delivery, twice, back in depot, out for delivery, etc, then lost, then sent back to sender! At least I've had a full refund, but can't do the job, because the tools not with me. Bod1

Somewhat interesting rip saw which was my grandfather's.

Looking further into Andy's link the Atkins 590 Docking saw, looks very similar, the blade shape is the same, the handle is very similar, any differences could be put down to artistic licence in the catalogue...

Salvaged this saw from local dump.

"War finish" was only used by Record from 1939-45, to show that no chrome plating had been used. Cadium plating was used instead, which explains why the cap lever, if still original, is dull not shiney. Bod1 P.S. See for explanation. http://www.recordhandplanes.com/dating.html

    Old texts on glazing

Handling putty....All I get is a sticky gluey mess. Shown by a painter and decorator, he could get the smooth handful, ready to "thumb" into the rebate, less than 20 seconds in my hand, stickly unusable mess! Whats the secret? Bod1

Salvaged this saw from local dump.

"Warranted Superior" medallion on this saw has to my eye the apperance of Disston, probably a late 1950's offering when Disston was owned by Porters (Black and Decker fame) https://www.disstonianinstitute.com/medv2.html An interesting site for Disston Saws. Could have a reasonable blade, but...

    Pincers

Solved that boat, built and filled 3 small tool boxes with basic hand tools, one to each child, as they set up home. However, I now have to take a 4th box with me on visits, as various small sticky fingers, mean some tools are now not in the boxes! Most of the tools came cheaply from car boot...
