• Hi all and welcome to TheWoodHaven2 brought into the 21st Century, kicking and screaming! We all have Alasdair to thank for the vast bulk of the heavy lifting to get us here, no more so than me because he's taken away a huge burden of responsibility from my shoulders and brought us to this new shiny home, with all your previous content (hopefully) still intact! Please peruse and feed back. There is still plenty to do, like changing the colour scheme, adding the banner graphic, tweaking the odd setting here and there so I have added a new thread in the 'Technical Issues, Bugs and Feature Requests' forum for you to add any issues you find, any missing settings or just anything you'd like to see added/removed from the feature set that Xenforo offers. We will get to everything over the coming weeks so please be patient, but add anything at all to the thread I mention above and we promise to get to them over the next few days/weeks/months. In the meantime, please enjoy!

    Toaster recommendation?

Can anyone recommend a toaster (preferably four separate slots) which will take larger slices of bread? My old Russell Hobbs' slots measure 17cm front to back and that is fine, but I can't find anything like that to buy now. Searching around the web, Warburton's Toastie dimensions seem to be the...

Simplest kiln - further reducing air-dried wood's moisture

I've never used a kiln but have been reading around methods used. Until now, I've brought air-dried boards into the house (with central heating) and allowed them to reduce moisture content from about 20-18% to 10% before using. I'm thinking to bring a 6' x 2' milled air-dried log home and...

    Holm Oak

Purely for the shape I made, not for the grain. Another 'wtf is it' piece. :-) Maple and acrylic, about 12". Phil recommended Hope's sanding pads a few years ago; since then, I've struggled repeatedly to guess what grit I have on each, until today. A significant breakthrough most wouldn't have...

    Woodfair today, South Wales

In case anyone's looking for something to do today in the pouring rain... This is the third fair we've organised in celebration of the life of a 240-year-old beech tree taken down locally three years ago, and the things made from it. The workshops are mainly aimed at younger children...

    Pergola/ vine

Last spring, some of you chaps advised me on building a minimal pergola/ vine frame. I've just been out cutting back lots and lots of leaves in a last-ditch attempt to get the grapes to ripen (I didn't know you're supposed to do that), they do seem to have made an effort the last week in spite...

    Holm Oak

Purely for the grain, not for the shape I made. I think it's stunning. It's really hard wood, but turns nicely. I'd planned to carve into a section of the surface but seeing the grain, decided it was quite happy doing its own thing!

    Shaping advice sought

Second trial, pretty similar to the first but this one's about 9" and in cherry. Here's another question - does anyone have a method of clamping such a shape so it can be bandsawn safely? I know the easiest method would be to saw, then turn, but again it's hard to visualise the cut I want...

    Shaping advice sought

This piece is bigger and I found the Saburrtooth slow going, so decided to try this old chisel of dad's. It seems to work well. As I recall it's not a carving tool but a woodworking one, but can't remember what it's for - any thoughts? The stamp says 'Palm Tree'. Have to say, apart from being...

Cheap shed/ setup for outdoor MIG?

I have no space indoors for MIG welding and understand it's not much good outdoors, especially with the winds we seem to get here in Wales. I've pondered a metal shed but it seems condensation's a problem, and I'm assuming a wooden shed's not the way to go. A concrete block shed seems like it'd...

    Hammer handle - quick question

Thanks Cabinetman, I had no idea about that. I watched a video and came up with this - most of the dents are gone but there are still some, and I don't want to take more off in case I alter the shape of the face. I don't think it'll be used for hitting nails so much as used for shaping metal...

    Hammer handle - quick question

This one's missing a generation - my dad was the last to use it, and I'm sorting it out for my lad to use, he's just starting a metalworking course. I enjoy restoring tools, but it's best when it belonged to someone special, he'd have been delighted to think of his grandson using his kit. I...

    Hammer handle - quick question

You mean like this, Phil?

    Hammer handle - quick question

Having nearly finished roughing out a replacement handle for one of my dad's old hammers, I realised I have the rings running across the handle rather than in the direction of impact. Is it worth persevering with, or start again? The wood's steamed beech. Thanks C

    Shaping advice sought

I was stressed enough using the Saburrtooth burr that Roger recommended - I bought a green one, wild! Works a treat for stock removal on this scale. I also bought a small carving tool from Flexcut for final texture, just the blade bit and I'll make a handle. I need some practice with that, I...

    Shaping advice sought

I want to make several versions of a small (about 8" max measurement) wooden sculpture, based loosely on this kind of piece by Hepworth: Mine will be simpler with just one hole going through, but with the same kind of transition from the outer profile going through the the form. As I'm hoping...

    Panel hacksaw?

Thanks Chris (and Roger, again) for the offer of a more suitable tool! But, we're done (assuming the bits actually fit when we hand it over to the fella doing the welding)... I'm thinking of marketing the saw as a meditation aid, that and a few metres of steel gives you time to escape the...

    Panel hacksaw?

    ... this happened!

    Panel hacksaw?

I aspire to think like a woodworker, metal's not even on my radar! Don't forget it's a curve, Dave - tho I did think you fellas would get the job done in as many seconds as it took us in minutes. That panel's done, but the other profile now needs two cuts, each a meter, one straight and one...

    Panel hacksaw?

No laughing, this is the result of about 30 mins sawing, but we're getting there. I think that's a pretty impressive saw build, and so far have all fingers in tact and nobody's crotch has burst into flame. Just thought I'd update as it offers a break. :-)

    Panel hacksaw?

We're trying to cut a shallow curve in a meter length of 0.9 mm mild steel for a repair panel on a car. My jig saw is worse than useless, it follows the direction it wants. I checked out prices of good jig saws and they're expensive. Searching around, I see there's such a thing as a panel...
