• Hi all and welcome to TheWoodHaven2 brought into the 21st Century, kicking and screaming! We all have Alasdair to thank for the vast bulk of the heavy lifting to get us here, no more so than me because he's taken away a huge burden of responsibility from my shoulders and brought us to this new shiny home, with all your previous content (hopefully) still intact! Please peruse and feed back. There is still plenty to do, like changing the colour scheme, adding the banner graphic, tweaking the odd setting here and there so I have added a new thread in the 'Technical Issues, Bugs and Feature Requests' forum for you to add any issues you find, any missing settings or just anything you'd like to see added/removed from the feature set that Xenforo offers. We will get to everything over the coming weeks so please be patient, but add anything at all to the thread I mention above and we promise to get to them over the next few days/weeks/months. In the meantime, please enjoy!

    wet rot

*sigh* I have one of those little jobs that in the space of a day has turned into a massive problem, hampered by an inability to travel or source timber. I have a large bay window in my workshop/annex as seen in the photo below - taken about 6 years ago when we moved in It is approx 12 feet...

    Fascia Boards

Is there any reason why I shouldn't replace some rotten facia board with WBP ply? I could lip with solid timber if the edge contains voids. The existing appear to be pine of some description but I estimate (from standing on the ground admittedly) these are between 8" and 10" deep - getting a...

    Golden Wedding Jewelry Box

No WIP photos as this one was a rush job - my parents had a Golden Wedding anniversary last weekend and were going to be away for it. Plans changed the week before and they wanted family to come to their house for a bit of a do instead, so quick prezzie needed! Quick root around in the workshop...

Workshop Shelving/Cupboard project - photo heavy

Well, just to show that I can eventually finish a project I start - the storage now has doors! 18mm ply lipped with 18mm pine just for a bit of contrast, hinges nice and cheap from Toolstation, but had to pay good money for handles and door bolts that fitted the look from ironmongery direct.Used...

Epoxy resin - wood to fibreglass

I am likely to need to bond timber to existing fibreglass inside a boat in the nearish future. Various forums recommend epoxy (West epoxy in particular) as an adhesive while others state that gripfill or equivalent 'tube based adhesives' will be fine. Does anyone have any experience of using...

Am I being daft? Sash window query

Currently building a couple of sashes to replace some rotten ones and ordered components from Chiltern Timber. With a traditional box sash window, the upper sash is towards the outside of the house and the lower sash to the inside. The top and bottom meeting rails from Chiltern have a bevel so...

Workshop Shelving/Cupboard project - photo heavy

So you know how it goes - the workshop is always the last place to get a bit of a make-over when doing up the house. Those old kitchen cabinets that SWMBO didn't want in the kitchen anymore make it out to the garage/shed/workshop and you put up with the warped shelves, wonky doors and mismatched...

You know when SWMBO gets an idea......

We live in the middle of a town. The middle mind, not the edge. SWMBO feeds the birds (excessively in my opinion), we have the odd grey squirrel and a few big trees nearby including a big London Plane in our garden that I want to die but has a TPO on it so I cannot help it along. SWMBO then saw...

    Plywood - when did 6mm become 5.5mm?

I have a rail and stile cutter from Axminster, several years old but still sold. The groove this makes for the panel insert of a cabinet door is 6.35mm for presumably a 6mm board. Just been searching for plywood to make some panels and it all seems to be 5.5mm now. MDF at 6mm no problem. So when...

    Box hinges

Hi All - I have checked the 'suppliers' dropbox list but not really been able to find what I want from there, so asking here for recommendations. I have spent so little time in the workshop over the last 6 months that I decided to grab a rainy afternoon this weekend and make something, just to...

Dado compatible saw coming to Axminster

Just received the Axminster e-mail regarding their new trade machines. Seems they are soon to be putting out an HSE compatible dado capable table saw! No specs or price yet, just a teaser so no idea how far off this is, but I bet it will be a big seller if it is reasonably priced. Anyone have...

Incra I-box - mini review and initial teething troubles!

Your wish is my command! Sorry about the odd light spots in the photos - this is the ceiling lights reflected in the kitchen worktop. I think my favourite of these 3 is the semi with logs, then the dump truck. The string solution on the forklift is inelegant and already starting to wear...

Incra I-box - mini review and initial teething troubles!

Well I think I have finally solved this little problem, and now have acceptably tight finger joints that I am happy with. The trick seems to be to cut both sides of the board each time you tweak and do a test - it is impossible to tweak one board to fit an existing board. No pics because I had...

Incra I-box - mini review and initial teething troubles!

I have finally spent a half day in the workshop  It has been a while but I have had finally been able to have a potter about and get to a task that has been on my 'to-do' list for quite some time - setting up an Incra I-box. Most of my 'woodwork' is an off-shoot of DIY. I can fix things...

    Cabrefloor P5 flooring question

Hi Chaps - apologies for not being around much recently, a change in job at work and then breaking my leg and being in plaster for 6 weeks means I haven't had much chance for woodwork in quite some time :( Good news is that I am now hobbling about without crutches albeit with a plate, 9 pins...

    Display Cabinets - slow WIP

It has been rather a long time since I posted anything useful or interesting due to massive work commitments, but a bit of free time between Christmas and New Year means I can start a new project, even if it will take me a while to complete it! A while ago I asked for sources of UK oak...

    UK derived timber

I have been requested to build a couple of display cases, and asked whether they can be made from UK grown and harvested timber (Ideally from the Lincoln/Lincolnshire area but this is probably pushing it a bit far!). Normally I would have gone to MAC timbers for this, but as they are no longer...

    Saggy bottom.....

After some advice again chaps, after getting confuzzled by google and the sagulator. Long story short - I need to build a carport in a hurry, ie next weekend ideally. Nothing fancy, quick and dirty will be fine. Going for a simple timber frame with onduline corrugated roofing sheets on the top...

Cutter head and non-turning bolts: edit - BANG!

I have an Axminster CT330 thicknesser, about 5 years old. The knives are held in the cutter head by a gib strip, with 6 bolts that go through both the strip and the knife and into the head itself. Each bolt has a hex recess for a supplied allan key. Of the 12 bolts, only 1 turned. Application of...

    Parquet progress (finished)

So I have an interesting little project coming up shortly - laying approx 20m2 of reclaimed teak parquet flooring in our dining room. Photos to follow, but first I have a question! I understand about leaving an expansion gap for the parquet itself and as removing the skirting was not an option I...
