• Hi all and welcome to TheWoodHaven2 brought into the 21st Century, kicking and screaming! We all have Alasdair to thank for the vast bulk of the heavy lifting to get us here, no more so than me because he's taken away a huge burden of responsibility from my shoulders and brought us to this new shiny home, with all your previous content (hopefully) still intact! Please peruse and feed back. There is still plenty to do, like changing the colour scheme, adding the banner graphic, tweaking the odd setting here and there so I have added a new thread in the 'Technical Issues, Bugs and Feature Requests' forum for you to add any issues you find, any missing settings or just anything you'd like to see added/removed from the feature set that Xenforo offers. We will get to everything over the coming weeks so please be patient, but add anything at all to the thread I mention above and we promise to get to them over the next few days/weeks/months. In the meantime, please enjoy!

    Finger Pull Bit

You could use thicker MDF. I've done them with a spark fin pull with a matching backer let into the front of the gables as an alternative

    Aurora Borealis

I spent a few hours waiting last night on top of a hill near the village armed with the camera but didn't see anything. The night before my daughter sent some photos from her way back from work. Gutted I missed them. The only time I have seen the was years ago on a flight to the USA, I spent a...

Light restoration of an Ulmia Reform Hobel

I'm found a clip of how it fits together. They are machined with a 'frase' tool. This term can cover anything with a spinning cutting tool across wood and metal work. From about 1:15. I'm sure I have seen a video of a factory tour, but I can't find it at the moment.

    Alternatives to Blum for kitchen?

Hettich runners, drawer boxes and hinges are good. I recently used some random ebay 4 way adjustable drawer runners that I think came form Poland, they have been absolutley fine in my kitchen - Oak drawers. No idea though on the complete metal drawer box packages.

Shadow lines with flush-fitting face frames

The crack will be in the bottom of the V should it appear. The purpose of the detail is to give a crack somewhere to hide.

Light restoration of an Ulmia Reform Hobel

Here is my family of German planes, I've mostly picked them up on small ads and been gifted them from people's basements. There is a scrub, 2 jacks, a Putz Hobel with the adjustable blade and mouth, toothed plane, shoulder and the big jointer which is my favourite. The blades in them are fantastic.

Light restoration of an Ulmia Reform Hobel

I really like the steel button for retracting the blade depth with a little hammer. The jack plane looks the same as the smoother but slightly longer with a wider mouth. My most used though is the shoulder rebate plane, it's ace. I had to round the back off as it was a really sharp corner on the...

Light restoration of an Ulmia Reform Hobel

I've picked up a load of them over here in Germany. I believe the correct name is putzhobel.

    Bee keepers beware

I was a reluctant bee keeper, my wife got a hive from school, which then became my job when she realised it's hot and heavy awful work. As you know managing one is hard, two is easier and six even easier. I don't eat honey and and allergic to the stings. Interesting definitely, but when I was...

    Bee keepers beware

We have got ride of our bees. Are you running a single or double brood box. I went over to a single brood chamber system and it really helped with controlling swarming. I think it's called nadier. Even so sometimes there is nothing you can do, last year was ridiculous. The worst was when we...

    Chicken Coops

I can remember the space calculation I used, I think it was 10 sq. ft per chicken and 15 for the ducks. What I learnt was if the ducks could stand on top of each other they would, completely brainless and always together. Having the coop box raised gives extra sheltered space when they are in...

    DRO on radial arm saw

That sounds like a great idea, especially if there is one for the rotation. Could you bodge something up from one of those digital bevel/protractors? I recently put a cheap one on my P/T and its working reall well. It doesn't have an automatic shutoff or a backlit display. The lack of shutoff...

Chest of drawers and lock mitre joint

Here are some sections I have made up for a kitchen I'm working on. To give you an idea of the joint width the stock is 26mm.

    Thicknessing Extraordinarily Hard Timbers

Slot morticers were the norm over here, I've seen the occasional maka vibrating head unit as well. A joiner I know here was amazed by my Whitehead morticer. A lot of the old machines available have the facility to run a slot morticer. I reecently had one turned down to use as a deep pocket...

    Mkaita 3612

My old Makita, to be fair has had a lot of use, I'm starting to notice a definate amount of play between the body and legs when plunging. Has anyone stripped one down and is there any adjustment. On the spares list the contact point for the legs seems to be the lower moter mount, but there are...

when is a plank a baulk?

I usually buy by the boule here in Germany, and the lengths you can get from the sawmill are huge compared to what I am used to in the UK. You can only get complete packs or boules. I would say what you have is just a board. At the moment im churning through some 40mm Beech and that is iver 4...

    In praise of cabinet scrapers.

Here is a quick look at the scraper planes. I had a look and they are going for a song over here with a little bit of looking if anyone is interested I'm sure we can sort out getting them back to the island. Hand tools here, especially the wooden planes are not carrying as much as a premium as...
